We invite everyone to bring their own items that need repairing, however, socks will be provided for the workshop. You will also make darning samplers on linen cloth with embroidery thread, and explore patched mending. Celia will bring books and slides of both her work and others who employ mending and darning in their work, these will be available for you to reference

This is a two-part workshop in the second half Celia will concentrate on the art of Sashiko :-

'Sashiko (刺し子?, literally "little stabs") is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches, this running stitch technique is often used for purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery.'

  • Develop traditional darning and mending skills, including patching and Sashiko.

  • Explore ways in which to repair youor own garments

  • Develop an understanding of visible and invisible mending.

  • Level: No previous experience is necessary however accomplished darners are most welcome, there will be a range of activities to meet different levels and there is much opportunity to explore your creative side.
