Maximum Class Size: 6
Our Introduction to Sewing Stretch is an intensive six-week programme for a beginner plus level, if you have already tried making garments using woven fabrics and would like expert guidance for your first few stretch projects, then this is the course for you.
Most basic items of clothing are more commonly made using jersey, such as leggings, T-shirts, casual dresses etc. Yet novice seamstresses are commonly nervous about exploring the possibilities of sewing with stretchy material. Our course schedule not only teaches you the skills and tips unique to working with jersey but you will also come away with 3 finished garments for you to wear and be proud of. Completing this course will open up a whole new spectrum of commercial pattern options and you will leave with the confidence you need to work with any fabric without limiting yourself to woven fabric only.
We will also give you a short induction on the overlocker (serger) in week 3, with these machines you will have the option of overlocking seams to give your garments an industry style finish. However, as this skill that is not versatile for those who don’t own an overlocker we will show you several alternative stitches that are achievable on your domestic sewing machine, including using a double needle, that will help you to gain a professional looking finish on all your future jersey garments.
The six weekly sessions are grouped into 2 classes per garment, the following schedule will give you an idea of what you will achieve by the end of the course:
Weeks 1 & 2
Weeks 3 & 4
Weeks 5 & 6
The patterns are complimentary and will be yours to take away but you will be required to bring your own fabric for the garments, . All tools and refreshments will be provided in the class.
Students for this course should be competent basic sewers and as a minimum should have completed our Next Steps session or equivalent, it is preferable that you have already had some dressmaking experience. Please get in touch if you have any queries about your starting level.
Some homework will be required during the course.
