When it comes to a successful dressmaking project, few things are as important as getting a good bodice fit! The sequence of processes when making any fitted dress start with making your bodice, then add your fastenings and finally join to the skirt, whether it be straight, A-line or gathered. Once you have mastered the techniques taught in this class you will also find that you can adjust certain commercial patterns with ease so that you have a more tailored and unique fit.

This workshop will focus on fitting and pattern cutting skills. You will come away from the class with a toile, a finished paper pattern for your bodice & sleeves plus the skills & know how to make fitted patterns for others.

In this class you will learn the traditional method of making a block, by taking specific, accurate body measurements. Following your teachers guidance and instruction you will map out the contours of your torso onto pattern paper and draft a block that is perfectly sized for you. Using this pattern you will construct a toile (sometimes called a muslin) and make small fit adjustments, once you are happy with the fit you will learn how to transfer these adjustments to the pattern.

You will cover the following techniques is class:

  • Taking accurate body measurements

  • Drafting your bodice pattern

  • Adding seam allowances

  • Constructing a Toile

  • Making small fit adjustments

  • Transferring alterations to your pattern

  • Creating a sleeve pattern to fit

  • Level: These classes are aimed at confident sewers, you will get the most out of them if you have used commercial patterns before and have experience in making a variety of different garments.

All tools and materials are included and refreshments are provided and lunch is included.

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion before going straight into the fashion industry and working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from designers to high street suppliers and, after having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger.
