This course explores traditional darning and mending techniques as well as Celia’s own creative practice of visible mending. You will investigate the care involved in mending, and the emotional or social value of darning and repair.

In the first session participants will practice woven darning techniques on knitted items like socks and jumpers. The second session focusses more on the repair of woven items like shirts and jeans and Celia will show you how use Sashiko embroidery and Japanese Boro Textiles as inspiration to patch, mend and reinforce points of wear.

Level: No previous experience is necessary however accomplished darners are most welcome, there will be a range of activities to meet different levels and there is much opportunity to explore your creative side.

Materials: We invite everyone to bring their own items that need repairing, however, socks will be provided for the workshop. You will also make darning samplers on linen cloth with embroidery thread, and explore patched mending.

Celia will bring books and slides of both her work and others who employ mending and darning in their work, these will be available for you to reference during the workshop.

"Now I darn and am looking for holes in people’s clothes and the stories that accompany them; repairing these holes and returning the mended garments. It is a way to briefly make contact with strangers. I am interested in the spaces the body occupies, the tenderness of touch and the ways in which we go about day to day life".
