Hand Embroidery with Richard McVetis

Friday 08 June 2018

Session: 1

Time: 11.00am-4.30pm

Level: Complete Beginner

Maximum Class Size: 10

Embroidery is an international language made up from hundreds of stitches. A few of these stitches happen to be the favourite of artist Richard McVetis.

In this Friday daytime workshop participants will explore the enormous scope of stitches and their versatility. Create fascinating textures and patterns, work a stitch in different threads changing its scale and spacing, work freely, and combine stitches to mark make and draw. This is an experimental approach to stitch and draws on the imagination of each participant.

Richard will be on hand to guide and inspire you through the workshop drawing on his ten years of stitching experience. This is also a chance to unwind, slow down and experience the calming benefits of this craft process.

Examples of Richards work will be on show along with artist and book references.

Richard studied Textiles at The Royal College of Art (2006 - 08) and Embroidery at Manchester School of Art (2002 - 05). His work reflects a pre-occupation with process and its ritualistic and repetitive nature. Using a limited vocabulary of mark making he explores the subtle differences that emerge within the repetition process.
