During this class you will uncover how to read and use commercial dressmaking patterns and start to understand basic garment construction. If you have already mastered the basics of machine sewing and want to start to make your own clothes then this is the class for you!


In three and a half hours you will be taught the language of dressmaking in the way that it is commonly written on sewing patterns. You will also be shown what the markings mean on the pattern itself and this will help you to understand how to successfully make clothes. In the process your will make this very stylish and simple top with back button fastening and bias bound trim.


Level: This class is suitable for sewers at a beginner plus level, and is ideal for those who have completed our Essential Skills for Beyond Beginners class and would like to start using commercial dressmaking patterns. This pattern is the perfect introduction to your dressmaking journey.


In class you will cover the following techniques:


  • Understand commercial patterns and their notations (darts, notches etc.)

  • How to choose the right size to cut

  • Pattern lay plans & straight of grain

  • Marking & cutting the fabric

  • Different ways to finish seams

  • Attaching bias binding

  • Tips and techniques on garment construction

  • Hemming

  • Fabric Requirements:


    Fabric 110cm wide
    Size 10-14: 1.3m
    Size 16-22: 1.4m


    Fabric 150cm wide
    Size 10-16: 0.8m
    Size 18: 0.9m
    Size 20: 1m
    Size 22: 1.1m


    Fabric Recommendations: washed linen, medium weight cottons, tana lawn, poplin, khadi cotton, .


    The pattern is yours to keep and comes in a pack with three other garments, a skirt, kimono style top and trousers. The top is one of our favourites and only uses around one meter of material so you can make it up again and again in all those fabrics you just can't resist!


    Tools and refreshments are provided.

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

    Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion before going straight into the fashion industry and working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from designers to high street suppliers and, after having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently she has been teaching in primary and secondary schools and is pleased to be combining her experience in schools with her years of experience in fashion to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and making their own clothes.
