During this day session learn how to make a simple pinafore dress or classic pair of overalls for your favourite little one! We will be using patterns by Minikrea, a Scandanavian brand that create fun and stylish designs for children.

This class is suitable for those who can thread up a sewing machine and know the basics of machine sewing, if you have already completed our single session Introduction to Machine Sewing class then this course would be perfect to follow on.

You will master the following techniques in class:

  • Tracing off patterns & adding seam allowances

  • Learn about the traits of woven fabrics (granlines & selvedges)

  • Understanding commercial dressmaking patterns

  • Lay the pattern and cutting fabric

  • Garment construction techniques

  • Learn how to make your own button holes

  • Fully lining garments and finishing

  • Pinafore Dress - Age 0-10 years

    This fully lined, reversible dress has two button fastenings at the shoulders. You can play with printed fabrics, embellishments and trims for something fun, or keep it simple with a gorgeous needle cord and brightly coloured lining. This pattern is designed for light to medium-weight woven fabric.

    Materials required:
    Fabric 140 cm wide: 40cm - 125cm (0-10 years)
    OR Fabric 110cm wide: 55cm - 185cm (0-10 years)
    Lining - Same as main fabric
    Buttons - 2 pcs

    Overalls - 6mths - 3 years

    These comfortable and roomy overalls are a great style for both boys and girls. Have fun with contrasting the outer fabric and lining, it's also possible to make these Overalls reversible so you may want to think about using two fabrics of a similar weight. This pattern is designed for light to medium-weight woven fabric.

    Materials required:
    Fabric 140 cm wide: 75cm - 90 cm (6mths - 3 years)
    OR Fabric 110cm wide: 110cm - 125cm (6mths - 3 years)
    Lining fabric - Same as main fabric
    Buttons - 2 pcs

    All tools, equipment, lunch and refreshments are provided and the pattern is yours to keep.


    Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion before going straight into the fashion industry and working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from designers to high street suppliers and, after having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently she has been teaching in primary and secondary schools and is pleased to be combining her experience in schools with her years of experience in fashion to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and making their own clothes.
