This simple and elegant wrap dress could be the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe, it’s easy to make and would be the perfect introduction to dressmaking. This class will cover all the basic dressmaking skills plus some pattern preparation.

The style includes straight darts, contour darts, neck binding and split at the back. There are no complicated fastenings (buttons or zips) just a stylish waist tie that can tie either to the front or the back, which makes this dress very flattering and comfortable to wear, perfect for formal occasions as well as every day wear!

Level: This class is suitable for confident machine sewists. Students for this class must have completed our Introduction to Machine Sewing 6 week course or have plenty of experience in using a sewing machine and already made simple projects such as bags and cushions. No previous dressmaking experience is required.

In class you will cover the following techniques:

  • Choosing the right size to cut

  • Understanding commercial dressmaking patterns and their notations

  • Tracing of patterns

  • Layplans and cutting the fabric

  • Garment construction techniques and handy tips

  • Finishing seams & Hemming

  • The pattern is complimentary and yours to keep, but you are required to bring your fabric for the dress. Tools and notions will also be provided and lunch is included.

    Fabric Recommendation: Choose a light and drapey fabric with approximately 20 – 60% stretch. For example ponti di roma, cotton jersey, cotton lawn, crepe, linen/rayon, cotton blends, cheesecloth. We made ours in Robert Kaufman Chambray Union - Speckled Indigo.

    Moyna Hamilton studied Clothing Technology at London College of Fashion before starting her career in the fashion industry working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from independent designers to high street suppliers. After having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. Moyna has been teaching Garment Construction and Pattern Cutting with Ray Stitch for over 6 years and is pleased to be combining her experience in fashion to teach others the art of sewing, and making their own clothes.
