Ends: Sunday 10 June 2018

Session: 2

Time: 10.30am - 5.00pm

Level: Complete Beginner

Maximum Class Size: 6

This weekend workshop is taught by Jane Brocket, a published designer and maker of exquisite patchwork quilts. During this class you will have the opportunity to complete your own machine-pieced block quilt. Beginners, don't despair! Jane will guide you through all the stages of quilt-making, starting with colour and fabric combination, repeat pattern, patchwork piecing, quilting and finally binding and finishing. By working on a 1.1m square piece you will be taught all you need to know to be able to scale up and make big, bold and beautiful quilts! You will also have the chance to explore your creative side as Jane inspires you to break out of your comfort zone while you are working surrounded by fabric and colour!

Level: No quilting or patchwork experience is required however you will need to be a confident machine sewer to be able to join this workshop. This is the perfect class for complete beginners or for those who have tried making a quilt a long time ago, and are perhaps either self taught or need a refresher.

You will cover the following techniques:

  • Rotary cutting

  • Machine-piecing

  • Cutting the backing fabric and batting

  • Making the quilt sandwich

  • Hand-quilting

  • Trimming & binding

  • Mitred corners & finishing.

  • Throughout the day there will be discussions about choosing and buying fabrics, creating simple quilt designs, and plenty of talk about colour. You will also have the opportunity to see Jane’s quilts up close and marvel at her clever use of materials!

Materials: You will be required to bring a selection of quilting cottons (minimum 4 designs) and cotton perle thread (8 or 16) if you wish to use it. Alternatively, you will be able to buy fabrics on the day. In total you will need a minimum 1.5m of fabric. We will supply sewing cotton, quilting cotton and wadding.

Tools and equipment are provided and lunch and refreshments are also included.

Booking the class entitles you to a 10% discount in the Ray Stitch shop where the staff will be very happy to help and advise.
