Adapt Sewing Patterns For a Better Fit

  • Make a Selection

Maximum Class Size: 5

This one day workshop will show you how to make adjustments to commercial dressmaking patterns so that you can create a better style and fit for your body shape.

Level: Students should be proficient machine sewers and have experience in using sewing patterns. You will get the most from this class if you are aware of a problem area that could always do with adjusting to make the pattern a perfect fit. For example: the shoulders are always too narrow or the armholes too tight. You are welcome to bring examples of garments you have made that do not fit properly, or a pattern you would like to to adjust.

As a basis we will work with a commercial pattern which features a fitted bodice with bust darts, four waist darts and optional sleeves. The skirt is gathered, therefore will fit all shapes which means we can focus on the fit of the bodice, the style of the neckline and the shape of the sleeves (if you want them.)

This is a skills and techniques class, you will not come away with a finished dress, instead you will produce a toile and come away with a finished pattern ready to cut and make in your own fabric.

You will cover the following techniques in class:

  • How to change the shape of the neckline and make new facings
  • Shorten/lengthen sleeves and skirt
  • How to move darts
  • Shorten/lengthen the bodice
  • Constructing a toile
  • Transferring alterations to your pattern

Once you have learned these invaluable skills you will want to adapt all your patterns, and finally your wardrobe will be truly bespoke!

All tools and materials are provided.

Testimonials:

'I’d just like to say thank you for a really great class yesterday with Moyna.  Moyna was so generous with her knowledge and time and is without a doubt a born teacher.  She was full of patience and wisdom and packed so much into the class I came away brimming with new information and ideas!  The school room is delightful and a really pleasant and comfortable place to hang out and the friendliness and hospitality of the other staff was most welcome too.  Thanks everyone for such a lovely day.'
