Improvised Patchwork with Forest + Found

Sunday 26 January 2020

Session: 1

Time: 10.00am - 5.00pm

Level: Some Experience

Maximum Class Size: 6

During this full-day workshop, Artist, Quilter and Co-Founder of Forest + Found, Abigail Booth will teach you how to create and piece together an improvisational abstract quilt design using your own fabrics.

You will begin by learning a little bit about Abigail’s own practices while she shows you examples of patchwork designs that she finds inspiring. She will also show you a selection of her own work which will help to start you feeling creative about your quilt. You will be given the chance to choose a template, this will let you think laterally about where to place your fabrics.

Abigail will guide you on how to work confidently with colour, and be free to experiment with layout and design according to your own taste and creative style. The more confidence you have with tone and colour, the better a quilter you become!

This class is the perfect opportunity to start exploring your creative side and raid your stash of fabrics or once-loved items of clothing. It is a chance to combine all your favourite fabrics into one beautiful piece of work.

Level: This class is suitable for confident machine sewers however you do not need to be an experienced quilter to book, all techniques that are unique to patchwork will be taught throughout the weekend!

  • For this course you will need to bring a selection of fabrics, even the smallest of scraps can be incorporated.

  • Fabric Requirements:
Quilt Top: In total you will need more than enough fabric to cover 110cm x 150cm, this will ensure you have plenty to play around with.
    Quilt Backing:110cm x 150cm.
    Border: Fabric 140cm wide - 1m

Threads, lunch and refreshments are all included.

Booking a class at Ray Stitch entitles you to 10% off all fabrics in-store for up to two weeks after the course, our team will be happy to help you with your fabric choices prior to the course.

Forest + Found is a sustainable craft and design partnership set up by Max Bainbridge and Abigail Booth in late 2014. Both having a background in Fine Art, their practice has an emphasis on material and process. Working with traditional methods of craft they produce contemporary wooden objects and hand stitched textiles. Their focus is on the use of hand tools and the direct experience of hand crafting the object. Simple acts of carving, hand stitching and natural dyeing are points of access in how they refine and develop their craft practice. Every object made in their London workshop has a direct relationship to the landscape and its architectural environment through the use of natural materials and considered design. From sourcing wood and dye plants in the forest, to each mark of the hand on an object, their work endeavours to tell a story.
