Children's Intro to Machine Sewing Part 1 - Make an Apron

Monday 25 May 2020

Session: 1

Time: 2.00pm - 5.30pm

Level: Complete Beginner

Maximum Class Size: 6

We run sewing classes during the school holidays for children 8 years and older, our workshops encourage creativity, as well as improving self-confidence, patience and fine motor skills!

Level: We have designed this class especially for children who are complete beginners looking to learn how to sew using a machine. If they have never used a sewing machine before or have had a go at using one briefly but would like more practice, then this is the perfect class for them!

We will familiarise your child with the machine itself, show them how to troubleshoot the most common problems when sewing and teach them all the basic skills of machine sewing to give to them confidence to start simple projects on their own. By the end of this 3 and half hour session they will have made their own apron using Ray Stitch fabric, ready to wear home!

In this class they will cover the following techniques:

  • Thread up a sewing machine

  • Wind on a bobbin

  • Understand stitch tension, length and width

  • Sew straight lines, corners and curves using a seam allowance

  • Cut from a pattern template

  • Pressing

  • Hemming

  • All materials, tools and refreshments are provided.

We also offer a follow on class where your child can make a backpack, and learn more advanced techniques including how to insert a zip. See alternative dates below.

Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion and immediately started her career in the fashion industry after she graduated working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from independent designers to high street suppliers. After having children, she successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently Moyna has been teaching sewing in different schools around London and has been with us now for over 6 years! She is pleased to be combining her years of teaching experience with her extensive knowledge in clothing to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and dressmaking.
