Level: This coat workshop is ideal for those who have already tried making clothes and would like to extend their knowledge beyond the basics to get a more professional finish to their garments with expert guidance from our teachers. We recommend this workshop to students who have completed our 6 Week Intro to Dressmaking Course, or equivalent. Students for this course should have made three or more garments using commercial sewing patterns.

Over the course of the weekend you will cut and construct a popular style by Papercut Patterns. The Sapporo Coat is a fully lined cocoon coat which features cropped sleeves, tapered cuffs and pockets hidden in the front seams. This coat has a flattering silhouette and could be made in any woven fabric; from a light cotton, rayon or silk right through to a heavy wool for Winter!

You will cover the following techniques in class:

  • Preparing your fabric and facings

  • Understanding complex commercial sewing patterns and their notations

  • How to make small alterations to the pattern for a better fit

  • Garment construction techniques

  • Set-in sleeves

  • How to insert a lining

  • One Step Button Holes

  • Optional top stitch detail

  • Preparation For Class:

We ask students to prepare for class by cutting out the paper pattern and fabric at home, this will mean you have more time for sewing in class. The pattern is included in the price and you can either pick it up from our store or we can post it out to you... just let us know!

    Fabric Requirements:

    Main Fabric

    140cm wide - All sizes (Bust 32"-44"): 2.8m

    Lining Fabric

    140cm wide - All sizes (Bust 32"-44"): 1.4m

Fabric Recommendations: Wool and wool blends, heavy cotton canvas, drill and twill work perfectly, but it would also look fantastic in denim or corduroy! You can also choose a softer fabric such as medium weight twill or washed linen for a more transitional coat. We made ours in Panama Wool - Speckled Pastel Grey. Remember that if your fabric is machine washable then it is advisable to pre wash before class.

Tools and equipment are provided and the pattern is included but you will need to buy fabric, please see fabric requirements above. Lunch & refreshments will also be provided on both days.

Booking a class at Ray Stitch entitles you to 10% off everything in store where our staff will be happy to help with choosing your fabric.

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion before going straight into the fashion industry and working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from designers to high street suppliers and, after having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently she has been teaching in primary and secondary schools and is pleased to be combining her experience in schools with her years of experience in fashion to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and making their own clothes.
