In this all-day workshop you will learn how to sew either a women's lightweight woven sweater or mens classic T-shirt, also in woven fabric. There is the option to make the Fielder Sweater longer so that it can be worn as a dress too. Both patterns are designed by Merchant and Mills, a brand that epitomizes functionality and style.

These two garments are simple and very wearable which makes them perfect as a first project, you will come away from class with a finished garment as well as valuable new sewing skills. 

Level: This class is suitable for confident machine sewers with little to no experience in making clothes, it is ideal for students who have completed our Intro Part 2: Essential Skills for Beyond Beginners class and would like to start using commercial dressmaking patterns to make their own clothes.

In class you will cover the following techniques:

  • How to take body measurement to choose the right size to cut

  • Understand how to ready commercial sewing patterns

  • Fit & adjustments

  • Pattern lay plans

  • Marking the fabric in preparation for sewing

  • How to attach stretch ribbing to woven fabric

  • Tips and techniques on garment construction

  • This garment and can be made using a wide range of fabric, from lightweight cotton or linen to a drapy wool blend. Choose either a matching or contrasting cotton rib for the neckline and cuffs to create something really unique.

    Tools and equipment will be provided and the pattern is your to keep but you will need to bring your own fabric and ribbing. Light refreshments will also be provided for you.

    Fabric 110-120cm Wide: Size 6 = 2.3m Sizes 8-10 = 2.4m Size 12 = 2.5m Size 14-18 = 2.7m

    Fabric 140cm Wide: Size 6-8 = 2.1m Sizes 10-18 = 2.3m

    Plus 25cm of Cotton Ribbing

    Fabric 110-120cm Wide: Size 6 = 1.3m Size 8 = 1.4m Sizes 12-18 = 1.5m

    Fabric 140cm Wide: Sizes 6-8 = 1m Sizes 10-18 = 1.3m

    Plus 40cm of Cotton Ribbing

    Suitable Fabrics: Medium weight woven fabric, washed linen, poplin, shirting, cheesecloth, brushed cotton, barkcloth, chambray, crepe, cotton prints, double gauze, lightweight denim, drapey wools & bonded jersey.


    Size 36: 1.2m (All fabric widths)

    Size 38-40: 2m (Fabric 110cm/120cm wide) or 1.2m (Fabric 140cm+ wide)

    Size 42-46 - 2.1m (Fabric 110cm / 120cm wide) or 1.25m (Fabric 140cm+ wide)

    Plus 10cm of Ribbing (all sizes)

    Fabric Recommendations: Laundered linen, soft cottons, chambray, cotton poplin, lawn, shirting, quilting or medium weight cotton prints.

    Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion before going straight into the fashion industry and working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from designers to high street suppliers and, after having children, she also successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently she has been teaching in primary and secondary schools and is pleased to be combining her experience in schools with her years of experience in fashion to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and making their own clothes.
