Online Darning & Mending Workshop with Celia Pym

Saturday 30 May 2020

Session: 1

Price:
£35.00

Time: 2.00pm - 4.20pm

Level: Complete Beginner

Maximum Class Size: 12

An online darning & mending workshop perfect for learning how to repair those holes in heels, elbows, pockets and knees - what better way to spend an afternoon indoors!

This class explores traditional darning and mending techniques as well as Celia’s own creative practice of visible mending. You will investigate the care involved in mending, and the emotional or social value of darning and repair.

During this online session participants will practice woven darning techniques on knitted items like socks and jumpers to patch, mend and reinforce points of wear.

Level: No previous experience is necessary however accomplished darners are most welcome, there will be a range of activities to meet different levels and there is much opportunity to explore your creative side.

Materials: We will send participants* a little starter kit for you to use in your workshop, this will include two darning needles, a reel of Laine St. Pierre darning wool and an illustrative darning card. We also invite everyone to repair their own items. If you don't own anything holey that needs repairing then you could perhaps stitch over a stain, or just use the process to embellish a jumper you have and make a feature of it!

*Unfortunately we can only deliver these kits to UK mainland residents.

Celia will give you references for books you might be interested to buy and show you examples of her own work, these will all be available for you to reference during the workshop.

Relevant artists: Louise Bourgeois, Sashiko work, Tom of Holland, Vladimir Arkhipov, Rachael Matthews: UFO project, Freddie Robins, Celia Pym

The workshop will take place using Zoom and we will send you very straightforward instructions of how to take part in advance. We promise it's not too techy!

Celia is an artist who works with knitting and embroidery. She teaches Art part-time in London secondary schools and works for ReachOutRCA at the Royal College of Art.

"Now I darn and am looking for holes in people’s clothes and the stories that accompany them; repairing these holes and returning the mended garments. It is a way to briefly make contact with strangers. I am interested in the spaces the body occupies, the tenderness of touch and the ways in which we go about day to day life".
