This workshop will introduce you to making clothes using stretch fabric, you will learn how to handle jersey using a domestic sewing machine and try a twin needle hem for finishing. Basic casual items of men's, women's and children's clothing are more commonly made using jersey, such as Leggings, T-shirts, Hoodies & Sweatshirts etc. In this 5 hour workshop you will make a unisex t-shirt in a fabric of your choice and go away with the skills to make many other basic items to fill your wardrobe!

Level: Students for this course must be confident machine sewers who have some experience in making simple projects such as tops, bags or soft furnishings. This course is ideal to follow on from our Introduction to Machine Sewing Course, especially for men who new to making clothes. This workshop also follows on from our Introduction to Dressmaking Course as you will learn a new skill.

You will cover the following techniques in class:

  • Measuring up and choosing the right size to cut.

  • Using commercial sewing patterns and marking the fabric, straight of grain in knits and cutting.

  • Explore the range of stitches available on a domestic sewing machine to finish your jersey appropriately.

  • Garment construction techniques & order of work.

  • The pattern are complimentary and will be yours to take away but you will be required to bring your own fabric for the garment. All tools, refreshments and lunch will be provided in the class.

    Overlockers: This workshop will focus on how to gain a professional looking finish on jersey garments using your domestic sewing machine. We will show you several alternative stitches that are achievable on your domestic machine including using a double needle. If you are thinking about buying an overlocker after this course, then we also offer a class to show you in more detail how to work and trouble shoot these machines called Introduction to The Overlocker.

    Moyna Hamilton studied clothing technology at London College of Fashion and immediately started her career in the fashion industry after she graduated working as a pattern cutter. For over 18 years she worked for a wide range of companies from independent designers to high street suppliers. After having children, she successfully set up and ran her own children’s bed linen and accessories company called Eazy-Tiger. More recently Moyna has been teaching sewing in different schools around London and has been with us now for over 6 years! She is pleased to be combining her years of teaching experience with her extensive knowledge in clothing to teach others the art of sewing, pattern cutting and dressmaking.
