Are you looking to build on your sewing and dressmaking skills? If you have made a few garments already or are self taught and need some guidence with how to make clothes and use sewing patterns then this class might be the ideal next step to take you closer to being able to tackle future projects with ease and confidence!

Level: Students for this course must be confident machine sewers and as a minimum should have completed our Introduction to Machine Sewing 6 week course or equivalent. They should have already tried to insert a zip and have experience with using sewing patterns.

During this two part workshop you will learn how to make a simple, stylish shift dress or fitted gathered waist dress. Both dresses come with their own features and style options including french darts, a center back seam, zipper and vent. The sleeve length is optional and you can choose long, 3/4 or short, there is also the option of a high-neck collar for the shift dress. The pattern has back darts for a flattering shape, and a good fit! All this options offer a fresh look in each variation to make it your own. They also looks good in almost any fabric, we've made it up several times so you can come in to see which you like best!

You will master the following techniques in class:

  • Understanding commercial dressmaking patterns and their notations

  • Lay the pattern and cutting fabric

  • Garment construction techniques, including skirt vents

  • How to insert an invisible zip

  • How to insert sleeves

  • Make small adaptations to the pattern

  • All tools, sundry materials and the pattern are included however you will need to bring your own fabric for the dress, please see requirements below. Refreshments will be provided.

    Fabric Requirements - Shift Dress:

    Fabric 45”/115cm wide:-
    Size 8-12 = 2.6m
    Size 14 = 2.8m
    Size 16-18 = 2.9m

    Fabric 60"/150cm wide:
    Size 8-10 = 1.7m
    Size 12-18 = 1.8m

    Recommended fabrics: Cotton and cotton blends, poplin, chambray, lightweight wool, wool blends, linen, lightweight twill, needlecord.

    Fabric Requirements - Gathered Dress:

    Fabric 45”/115cm wide:-

    Size 8-12 = 2m

    Size 14-20 = 2.2m

    Fabric 60"/150cm wide:-

    Size 8-12 = 1.4m

    Size 14-20 = 1.9m

    Penny Follows has sewn since an early age. She was fortunate enough to have a mother who was a skilled needlewoman who created a wardrobe of stylish clothes for them both. Penny’s grandmother, who was also a tailoress, taught and encouraged Penny to sew for herself and from there she has become an experience dressmaker. More recently Penny has worked with Janome as a sewing consultant at John Lewis and taught machine sewing at their flagship store in Oxford Street for a number of years. Penny joined Ray Stitch in 2016 and leads a variety of workshops, sharing her passion and enthusiasm for sewing and making clothes. She combines teaching with running her own business called The Village Seamstress taking most pleasure in creating bespoke garments for clients.
