Log Cabin - Three MORE Ways with Catherine-Marie Longtin
Maximum Class Size: 6 Students
Join inspirational textile artist and quilter Catherine-Marie Longtin to talk about her work and explore log cabins - her favourite piecing technique.
A log cabin block traditionally consists of strips of fabric (the logs) arranged around a square. It has been used since the middle of the 19th century, and its popularity as a piecing technique in quilting is no doubt due to its versatility, both within the block and in the arrangement of multiple blocks together. It can be endlessly refreshed and renewed.
In this second log cabin workshop, you will learn how to create three different log cabins using linen: the circle log cabin, the polygon log cabin and the paper foundation piecing log cabin.
Techniques covered in class:
- Cutting and handling of linen for patchwork.
- Full circle log cabin.
- Chain piecing blocks.
- Paper foundation piecing (choice of square or hexagonal log cabin).
- Fabric foundation piecing (irregular polygon (5+ sides) log cabin).
- Presenting your work: quilted cushion or artwork stretched on canvas frame.
Level: You will need to be reasonably confident with a sewing machine to attend this class. You do not need to have attended the first log cabin workshop.
Materials: All tools and materials are included. We will be using plain linen fabric. If you would prefer to bring your own fabric along to the class please do so.
Refreshments: Hot drinks, cold drinks and snacks will be available in the workshop throughout the day. There will be a break for lunch - lots of places nearby sell food or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch into the workshop.
