Weekend Workshop - Make a Quilted Jacket

  • Make a Selection

Maximum Class Size 6

Level: This is an Intermediate class designed for competent sewers who have used commercial sewing patterns already and wish to advance their skills.

We will be using the Megan Nielsen Hovea Pattern, which is a loose fit, drop shoulder jacket with three length options and style options on collar band, pockets and belt. Enjoy creating your own quilted fabric jacket and learn how to work with chunky (layered) fabric using a walking foot.

Fabric Requirements: You will be making your own quilted fabric for the project which will require double quantity fabric for the two layers. On booking, we will advise you on the amount of fabric you require based on your style option and size.

Recommended Fabrics: Lightweight cotton fabrics, quilting weight cottons and lightweight denims are best for this project. Avoid anything stretchy, shiny or with a lot of movement such as linen.

You can contrast outer and lining or use the same fabric for the inside and outside of the jacket but avoid anything too heavy on the inside.

In order to make the best use of time in the class it is essential that students cut out their pattern and their fabric before the class to maximise sewing time.

Things to consider

  • We will be quilting using either straight lines (vertical or horizontal but not both) or freestyle, unmeasured quilting so bear this in mind when you choose your fabric.
  • Quilting lines are less visible on darker colour or patterned fabric.
  • Lightweight cotton fabrics, quilting weight cottons and lightweight denims are best for this project. Avoid anything stretchy, shiny or with a lot of movement such as linen.
  • We will be using a walking foot on the sewing machines when we quilt the fabric. We have walking feet to fit the machines in the Sewing School but if you bring your own machine you will need to bring a walking foot which fits it. You may prefer just to use our machines for this project.
  • There is a lot to do in this class! With a good amount of prep, our excellent leadership and some focussed activity in class we hope to get it all done but don’t be too disappointed if you don’t leave with a fully finished Hovea. We’ll make sure you have the support you need to fully complete the project either at home or in one of our Freestyle sessions.

Snacks and hot/cold drinks will be available throughout the day. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby where you can purchase lunch, or you are very welcome to bring a packed lunch into the workshop.

Please have a read through our cancellation policy before booking:
