Weekend Workshop - Make a Quilted Jacket

  • £310.00

Maximum Class Size: 6

Level: Intermediate. Suitable for competent stitchers who are confident using a sewing machine and following commercial patterns. Ideally, you’ll have completed a few garments already.

Join us for a weekend of slow sewing and creative exploration as you make your own quilted jacket using the much-loved Hovea Jacket pattern by Megan Nielsen. This relaxed-fit, drop-shoulder design includes options for length, collar, pockets, and belt—allowing you to personalise your project and enjoy the process of quilting your own fabric from start to finish.

You’ll learn how to work with layered fabrics using a walking foot and explore simple quilting techniques that can be adapted to suit your style. Whether you go bold with print, tonal with texture, or refined with classic cottons, this is a chance to make something beautifully personal and practical.

Please note: This is a fast-paced class. With good preparation and focus, you'll get close to finishing your jacket, but full completion may require a few finishing touches at home or in a follow-up Open Sewing session.

Techniques Covered

  • Constructing and quilting your own fabric
  • Working with layered materials using a walking foot
  • Jacket assembly techniques (seam construction, topstitching, edge finishing)
  • Inserting pockets and optional belt
  • Finishing techniques for a polished look

Materials

You’ll be quilting your own fabric for this project, so you’ll need double the quantity of fabric to account for both inner and outer layers. Recommended fabrics include lightweight cottons, quilting-weight cottons, and lightweight denims. Avoid anything stretchy, shiny, or too drapey.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll send full fabric requirements based on your chosen view and size. You're welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you'd prefer, but please ensure it’s compatible with a walking foot and bring the foot with you. You're also very welcome to use our studio machines, which are fitted with walking feet.

Things to Consider

  • You’ll be quilting using either vertical/horizontal straight lines or freehand unmeasured quilting.
  • Quilting lines show up more clearly on light or plain fabrics, and less so on busy prints or dark tones.
  • While you can use contrasting or matching fabrics for the inner and outer layers, we recommend avoiding anything too heavy for the lining.
  • It’s essential that your pattern and fabric are cut in advance—this will allow you to make the most of your time in class.
  • We’ll provide walking feet for our studio machines, but if bringing your own, please ensure you have a compatible walking foot.

Preparation

To maximise sewing time during the weekend, students must arrive with their pattern and fabric pre-cut. We’ll provide all the prep guidance you need in advance.

Refreshments: Snacks and hot/cold drinks will be available throughout the day. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby where you can purchase lunch, or you are very welcome to bring a packed lunch into the workshop.
